Interjections can come in the form of a single word, a phrase, or even a short clause. Interjections can convey feelings that may sometimes be difficult to convey in sentences.
They are of different kinds :
Adjectives that are used as interjections.
Examples: ( The words in bold are interjections)
Very good ! I am impressed by your work !!
Beautiful !! What a piece of art !
Amazing ! I never knew she was such a good performer.
Nouns or noun phrases used as interjections.
Hi ! How are you ?
Congrats ! You are the winner !
My God ! You surprised me !
Some interjections are sounds:
Yuck ! It smells bad !
Ohh ! I am sorry .
Shh ! Don't make a noise !
How do you punctuate interjections ?
As they convey various emotions, there are many ways to punctuate them.
The exclamation point is commonly used to communicate strong emotions such as joy, anger, or shock.
For weaker emotions, a period (.) or a (,) will do.
Well, I can't do anything about your problem.
Hmm, I am trying to be patient.
Ah, my feet hurts !
Well , if you intend to use interjections to express uncertainty or disbelief, then you had better use the question mark. (?)
What ? You are not writing your exam ?
Oh, really ? I find that hard to believe.
Interjections may seem unimportant in the parts of speech, but are in truth, of utmost importance as they can sometimes convey emotions far better than sentences.
Yippie !!! We are finally done with the parts of speech !! Well, that wasn't hard to follow, was it ? Hmm, before we wind up I would like to include a small note on ARTICLES.
There are three articles : A, An and The
The first two refer to a single object or thing, while the third (The) refers to a single group. ( The birds, the Indians, the books)
'A' and 'An' are called indefinite articles while 'The' is called a definite article.
Use A and An when you are talking about a thing in general not a specific thing.
Examples :
I need to buy a new phone. (Not a Samsung Galaxy or a Nokia phone .... any phone).
Use them to talk about a type of thing we want to introduce.
Examples :
That is an interesting book. ( Describing the type of book).
I have a blue car. ( Describing your car).
Please do remember that A is used with words beginning with a consonant.
An is used with words beginning with the vowels (A,E,I,O,U).
They are never used with plural nouns.
( A dogs , an oranges , a men ) - WRONG USAGE
