Put in a very simple manner, Adverbs tell us when, where, how, in what manner and to what extent an action is performed.
It tells us more about a verb, an adjective and another verb.
There are three types of Adverbs:
- Adverbs of manner ( "How" or "in what manner")
- She spoke politely. ( How did she speak ?)
- He ran fast. ( how did he run ?)
- The child crawled slowly.
- The students answered correctly.
- The students worked hard.
- The other such adverbs are ; loudly, carefully, quietly, gently etc.
- Note the verbs underlined. The highlighted adverbs tell us how each action (verb) performs.
- Adverbs of Time ( "when")
- He came early to class.
- I formerly worked in the army.
- She will go tomorrow.
- It isn't possible to leave home now.
- Please inform her to come soon.
- The other such adverbs are : Yesterday, today, then, tonight etc.
- Adverbs of frequency ( " how often")
- Sammy comes to my house often.
- I saw the movie once.
- I always help the needy.
- I want to go to Goa again.
- He never visits his aged mother.
- The other examples for these adverbs are ; Daily, rarely, generally, monthly, yearly, seldom etc.
- Adverbs of Place (" Where")
- Please wait here.
- She was there yesterday with her friend.
- He looked down.
- We searched everywhere.
- My friend lives near the walkway.
- Other adverbs of place are ; outside, ahead, at the top etc.
- Adverbs of degree ("How much")
- He is very intelligent.
- The course is almost over.
- She ate the full plate of chicken.
- Note : You can make adverbs by adding "-ly" to adjectives.
- Slow - slowly
- Smart - smartly
- Silent - silently
- Brave - bravely
- Lucky - luckily
- Angry - angrily
- Graceful - gracefully
